Thailand produces three million tons of fishery products annually. Farmed
shrimp accounts for 90% of seafood exports by value. Farmed shrimp exports,
mostly to Japan and the U.S., of around 150,000 tons last year were valued
at $2.2 billion. Disease this year reduced production. (Danil
Shaw, 6/,97)
Thailand exported about 20 million pounds more than Ecuador in ,97 but
saw its yearly volume rise less than 1 percent. (Dan McGovern,
6/,98). The Thais have been getting the raw materials for their aquaculture
industry from India, Indonesia and Bangaldesh. |
