Mussels
With an overall production of more than 80,000 tonnes of mussels (Mytilus
edulis) in 1997, the Netherlands is the second largest producer of the species
(after Spain) in Europe. However, in terms of exports, the country
is the largest European exporter of mussels. During the 1996-1997 season,
Dutch exports of live, chilled, frozen and preserved mussels totalled 47,398
tonnes, valued at US$78 million. World production of mussels is estimated
at 1.3 million tonnes a year, with the European Union contributing more
than 500,000 tonnes. |
