Shrimp
Although India is the fourth largest shrimp supplier to the U.S. market
(19,000 tons last year), the country remains uncertified under a U.S. embargo
on wild-caught shrimp (shrimp caught by non-mechanical means are allowed).
Black tiger shrimp is being harvested earlier than usual in parts of
India in order to avoid losses to disease and typhoons. Due to the early
harvest total harvest weight will be less than initially anticipated and
later in the season there may be a shortage. This will force prices up.
India supplied 2,940 tonnes or 14.3% of the shrimp Japan imported in June.
For the first six months of the year Indian shrimp contributed 20% of Japan's
supply of imported shrimp.
Production in India is less than expected. Purchases of black tiger shrimp
by the US have been stronger than expected. As a result, black tiger prices
are rising.Bill Court 8/13/98 |
