Germany's domestic catches are decling. 212,000 tons were produced in 1992 and only 143,000 tons were produced in 1994. This has resulted in a larger market for imported products. Domestically imported Alaska pollock appears to be closing in on herring as the Germans favorite fish. In 1994, Germans ate nearly 7.2 pounds of Alaska pollock per capita, which amouted to almost 23% of their per capita seafood consumption. This represents a 35% increase over the year before.
