The Philippines is an island (7,100 of them) country in East Asia below Hong Kong. There are approximately 65 million people, and because of the geographical nature of its land, fishing or some form of aquaculture has been in practice for a long time. Inland aquaculture (inland ponds) consists mostly of raising milkfish and shrimps, mainly for
local consumption. But Tilapia has become the Philippines most valuable species. They are now the world's biggest commercial producer of tilapia. 
 

El Nino
Last year, as El Nino sent fishermen even farther out to sea in search of tuna, more than 700 Filipino fishermen were forced to spend time in Indonesian jails after their boats were confiscated. "Since 1966, the fishermen know that the tuna disappear every three or four years. But they always come back, says Salubre. Peter Redmayne- 5/,98
