Fish farming in Norway is strictly controlled by numerous laws and regulations
administered by the Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Environment, Ministry
of Agriculture, and Ministry of Local Administration and Labour. The Norwegian
market share in the US has increased over the past five years.
Although Norway overestimated the health of the Barents Sea resource
and didn't meet the quota set last year, Terje Korsnes, president fo the
nordic Group in Boston, expects Norway will continue to be a steady supplier

Europe's major salmon exporter is Norway, which shipped 3.5 million pounds
of salmon to the States in 1997. Norway shipped some 451 million kroner
(US$70 million) worth of seafood to Russia last year, an increase of 90%
over the previous year. (By comparison, exports to the U.S. climbed 11%
to 803 million kroner). |
