Fish farming in Norway is strictly controlled by numerous laws and regulations administered by the Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Local Administration and Labour. The Norwegian market share in the US has increased over the past five years.

Although Norway overestimated the health of the Barents Sea resource and didn't meet the quota set last year, Terje Korsnes, president fo the nordic Group in Boston, expects Norway will continue to be a steady supplier of cod to the United States. (6/'98)

Europe's major salmon exporter is Norway, which shipped 3.5 million pounds of salmon to the States in 1997. Norway shipped some 451 million kroner (US$70 million) worth of seafood to Russia last year, an increase of 90% over the previous year. (By comparison, exports to the U.S. climbed 11% to 803 million kroner).

  Species Reports

Salmon 
Norway now produces more than 50% of the world,s Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon production increased from 10,265 tonnes in 1982 to 210,000 tonnes in 1994, an average annual increase of more than 20%, with the highest percentage increase (41%) occuring from 1987 to 1988. There were 2 and 10% decreases in production during 1991 and 1992, respectively.
Lobster 
The lobster populations of Norwegian waters have shown catastrophic declines over the past 50 years. The economics of developing a commercial industry based on lobster releases has yet to be determined.
Shrimp
Norway exported 16,650 tonnes of shrimp with a total value of NOK 691 million from January until the end of July this year. This is an increase of 23.8% in volume and 28.4% in value from the previous year. The main shrimp product is frozen shell-on shrimp,  which represented NOK 488 million of the total value. Until the end of July this year, the UK had imported shrimp worth NOK 233 million fob from Norway; this is a formidable increase in value of 84% compared with the same period last year.  Exports to the US are also increasing fast; exports this year are worth about NOK 9 million compared with less than NOK 1 million last year.
