  Mussels
With an overall production of more than 80,000 tonnes of mussels (Mytilus edulis) in 1997, the Netherlands is the second largest producer of the species (after Spain) in  Europe.  However, in terms of exports, the country is the largest European exporter of mussels. During the 1996-1997 season, Dutch exports of live, chilled, frozen and preserved mussels totalled 47,398 tonnes, valued at US$78 million. World production of mussels is estimated at 1.3 million tonnes a year, with the European Union contributing more than 500,000 tonnes.
