Oil
Painting Reunites Spanish and Taos Pueblo - 1696
When Don
Diego de Vargas came to Taos in 1694 and 1696, the natives fled into the
mountains. He negotiated with the Indians for three days. On the
third day, September 24th, the Governor of the Pueblo sent Felipe, a former
Sacristan, down from the mountain. Felipe offered to return to the
Spanish some church vessels and an oil painting of Our Lady. De Vargas
knelt to receive this painting of Our Lady of Aranzazu, while his soldiers
saluted by shooting off their arquebussers. De Vargas rolled up
the painting, put it in his tent, and it was never heard of again. The
devotion to Our Lady of Aranzazu comes from the Basque country in the northern
part of Spain. A monastery enshrines the original sculpture. The
size of this mural is 36 x 60 inches.
