Don Juan de Onate Visits Taos - 1598

Around July 14, 1598 the first Governor of New Mexico, who settled in San Gabriel, visited Taos.  Shown with him are his cousin, Fray Cristobal Salazar, an Indian guide, and several soldiers.  Two young Pueblo men are peeking out from behind the bushes.  One can only wonder what they were thinking when they came upon this scene.  Don Juan de Onate was very impressed with Taos valley.  Onate followed a trail used by the Indians for many years which eventually became the Camino Real - a route from Mexico to Northern New Mexico.  The size of this mural is 36 x 60 inches.
