Taos has a earthy charm. It feels like a living and breathing town rather than an adobe museum--although some people might consider 85 art galleries just a FEW too many for a settlement of 5,000 permanent residents. But then, Taos has been an artists' colony for most of this century. The light is special here, uncannily so, and the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains are visible from almost every street and alley. It's the kind of place where Birkenstocks and cowboy boots--I mean old, beat-up cowboy boots--are the indigenous footwear, where all the women seem to have on long skirts of handwoven materials, and where at least half the breakfast patrons at Michael's Kitchen, or the lunchtime crowd at the Apple Tree, are reading serious books like "Walden" and "the Portable Nietzsche". The other half are carrying six-packs. Steeped in history and surrounded by wide-open Southwestern landscape, Taos is a spicy, raggedly beautiful, laid-back frontier town.
