TAOS TALKING PICTURES plans fifth annual film festival
August 1, 1998, Taos, New Mexico ... The Taos Talking Picture Festival, described by MovieMaker Magazine as "one of the country's leading film festivals," will be held April 15-18, 1999, in Taos, New Mexico. The festival is produced by Taos Talking Pictures, a New Mexico-based non-profit media arts organization founded in 1994 to encourage the thoughtful production and informed consumption of moving images.
At the 1998 festival, theaters were filled to 90% of capacity, audiences came from around the country, and major distributors and national media were in attendance. Approximately 8,000 filmgoers, 200 filmmakers and media professionals and 800 students attended the 1998 festival, which screened 140 films and videos of varying lengths from 20 different countries. The 1999 festival will have two additional theater venues, adding approximately 2,500 seats available to the viewing public.
Every year the festival offers several tributes and awards. The Taos Mountain Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a Native American media professional. The Maverick Award is presented to an individual who has retained his or her personal vision while working in the international film industry. The Howard Hawks Storyteller Award recognizes a writer/director who tells powerful stories in innovative ways. The winners of these three awards will be announced in late January 1999. The famed Land Grant Award - five acres of land given to encourage filmmakers to take a fresh approach to storytelling and/or the cinematic media -- will be announced at the 1999 festival.
The very popular Media Forum is called by organizers the "Soul of the Festival." It is held concurrently to packed houses and includes four days of panel discussions, media seminars, workshops and screenings.
