Taos Mountain Biking
Endless is just about the best description for biking in North Central NM. It is also similar to rafting in that you can bike mild or wild, short or long, flat or steeply climbing. Magnificent is another accurate description for Taos area biking. Sage covered mesas, grass covered meadows, aspen grove covered mountains, evergreen trees of many types, vistas that are scenic, quiet, and expansive. Please remember, the town is at almost 7,000 feet. Many trails range up to 12,000 feet. If you aren't in shape, work into your riding program. Sun block is essential both on the lower trails and especially on the high ones. Water too is a needed commodity. Weather may change radically. Make certain you ride at least in pairs or leave clear directions for your travels. Cell phones likely won't work on many of our bike trails. As the scouts say, be prepared! Taos has several bike and gear shops who can provide more detailed ride ideas and advice. Here are just a few of the possible rides. These are very close to the Inn and Taos. Expanding to a somewhat larger area increases your choices dramatically.
West Rim Trail. Beginner level trail following West rim of the Rio Grande Gorge for a total of nine miles. Great sunset time ride for varied scenery and colors. Starts at the US 64 rest area on the West side of the Rio Grande gorge bridge.
Rio Grande del Rancho (#18). Runs East for about 6 miles from 518. Starts approx. 4 miles south of Ranchos. Somewhat hard to find trailhead so bike shop advice is advised. Follows an old road bed after short climb from road.
South Boundary Trail (#164). Ranked in the top 50 rides in the country and amongst best in SW by some riders and publications. Not for beginners. Probably best done the first time with a local guide.
When you get a map of the local forest service areas, you'll find more back roads than you can imagine. There are trails in every direction from Taos, around the Angel Fire Resort area, Red River offers many choices, Tres Piedras provides many options, towards Las Vegas or Santa Fe, and more further out.
For those who prefer a resort area, try www.angelfireresort.com . They offer bike rentals, around 30 miles of trails, and chair lift transportation to the mountain top. Many trails down the mountain.
